              Side is over 3000 years old. It's origins are lost in mists of antiquity. The Greeks, Romans, Celts, Hittites, Byzantines and Seljuks have all left their mark on Side at various times over the centuries.The town is liberally peppered with well-preserved ancient ruins
              The early civilisations came here attracted by the movements of the Sun and Moon at certain times during the year. They act in unison at the Solstices rising and setting simultaneously as if by clockwork. Stand under the columns of the Temple of Apollo next to the old harbour and observe this incredible phenomenon of nature as it happens
In 2006 Side had a total eclipse of the Sun. The next will happen again about 40 years.
 
              The Romans made Side into a major town building the temple of Apollo, an Amphitheatre seating in excess of 10000 people which is still used for classic entertainment in music and dance. Many other ruins exist such as teh expansive forum and multiple bath-houses.
            The water for side was transported from 35kms away in the Taurus mountains which is now the location of a huge dam feeding the whole region.
           The Romans knew a thing or two about Side. Many of the original building are now converted to Bars and Restaurants and places of entertainment.
